Mental Health Awareness and Best Practices

ree

May is mental health month and right now many people may be struggling to keep in together and establish a mentally healthy routine while dealing with the sudden changes Covid-19 has had on our lives. It's important to remember that if you're feeling a little anxious, lost or moody lately you are not alone and we are all going to get through this together. While we're waiting for things to get back to normal or for a "new normal" to be established, take this time to evaluate yourself and do things that bring your joy and peace.

Start by evaluating yourself and determining how you're doing today. I like to use this check list below.

Below are a few things you can do when you're feeling down or thinking negative thoughts to help boost your daily mental health:

Get creative:

Try a new recipe, challenge yourself to a DIY project, write songs or poetry. The point is to engage your mind and express yourself. I have found that coloring is especially relaxing. Who says coloring inside the lines is for kids?

Go for a walk

Grab your SPF and enjoy fresh air and sunlight. It could be a stroll through a park, or a hike in the woods. Research shows that being in nature can increase energy levels, reduce depression and boost well-being. While sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D, which experts believe is a mood elevator.

Make room for adventure

Be spontaneous and take moments as they come. Add excitement to your life and try something new! You may be uncomfortable but you will make memories that bring joy to your life.

Work some omega-3 fatty acids into your diet

They are linked to decreased rates of depression and schizophrenia among their many benefits. Fish oil supplements work, but eating your omega-3s in foods like wild salmon, flaxseeds or walnuts also helps build healthy gut bacteria.

Track gratitude and achievement with a journal

Include 3 things you were grateful for and 3 things you were able to accomplish each day you can include favorite quotes and daily affirmations for you to look back on or to set the tone for your day. This will give you goals to look forward to and you can keep track of all of the great moments you experience.

Laugh it out

Watch a funny movie or stand up comedian or call up a friend that always cracks you up and lifts your spirits.

Don't forget to check on your friends and loved ones and make sure they are during well. Everyone needs a little extra love ad support right now.
